This week our moving river art piece has continued on it’s journey along the Afon Cegin & Afon Ogwen with the help of two schools; Ysgol Llandygai and Ysgol Bodfeurig.

The Llyn Maelog Floating Wetland is now established! Below we have answered some frequently asked questions regarding this innovative project.

At NWRT we understand how important it is for our rivers that both people and nature are connected. Through our volunteer programmes we have countless opportunities for people to do this, but what happens when you can no longer access your local river with ease? Introducing our wetland care home initiative!

I have had such a varied first week as a river intern beginning with the floating wetland project on Llyn Maelog. This project was particularly special as it was taking place in my hometown of Rhosneigr and having such a close connection to the Llyn Maelog. It was great working with the Pupils of Ysgol Rhosneigr as that was the primary school I attended so this felt like a very fitting project to begin my internship.

Today we were joined by the pupils from Ysgol Dolbadarn to protest for cleaner waters and why people should consider the environment when voting in the upcoming general election. It was great to see the passion from the students and that passion get transferred to locals supporting the school kids on their protest walk through Llanberis.

On Wednesday July 3rd at 10AM we will be conducting a march around Llanberis to raise awareness for the Eryri Torgoch and the importance of #voteforivers in the upcoming general election. The march will be led by pupils from Ysgol Dolbadarn and the local community.

We’re thrilled to announce the final installation of our Floating Wetland at Llyn Maelog! After lots of hard work from our team, contractors, and community helpers, the floating wetland is in place.

Last week the pupils of Ysgol Tregarth began creating the first section of our collaborative moving art piece. The pupils created a beautiful river inspired piece using natural materials from the Afon Cegin, paint and passion for their local river!

For their second site visit the pupils from Ysgol Bro Hedd Wyn joined us for a morning of wildlife monitoring and habitat creation. In teams they set about creating ‘bug houses’ using dead materials they found on site such as twigs, leaves etc.

Our floating wetland project is underway! This morning Biomatrix water arrived at Llyn Maelog to offload the floating modules. It has taken a team a day just to link the panels into a module.

This week we employed our very first river intern. Jack has had a busy week and we asked him to write down a summary of his time with us this week.

We are pleased to report that this week Natural Resource Wales has issued Dwr Cymru a permit variation for the Bronaber treatment works. This now includes a Total Phosphorus limit of 5mg/l effective from the 24/06 and for the limit to be reduced further to 0.8mg/l from 31/03/2030. Previously the Bronaber sewage works had no limit imposed for Total Phosphorous.

Exciting news! The Floating Wetland is set to be built and installed in Llyn Maelog next week, starting the week commencing June 24th. This innovative project aims to improve our understanding of the effects of wetland plants and provide a habitat for various aquatic species.

The North Wales Rivers Trust is delighted to announce that Notos Café has been awarded the ‘Platinum Award’ for their commitment to sustainability.

Last week NWRT installed two sondes at Llyn Maelog and Llyn Coron. These sondes will measure algae, nutrients, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen at 30-minute intervals for the next three months. These data will help us to further understand the causes of algae blooms that are impacting these lakes.

Continued investigations into the Afon Eden and the Bronaber sewage works have identified a leaking sewage pipe upstream flowing into the Afon Eden. We are pleased to say that once Dwr Cymru identified the leak it was fixed.

On Monday the team attended Pilotlight charity impact day. We were honoured to be one of only two charities selected for this event, which brought together business leaders to provide strategic support.

Exciting updates for our Floating Wetland project! We are thrilled to announce that the plans for the installation into Llyn Maelog have been confirmed for the end of June.
