A Guide for River Users in North Wales

WILD WATERS

North Wales is home to some of the UK’s most treasured rivers, lakes, and wetlands — places that draw people in for adventure, reflection, and connection with nature. These waters support iconic species like Atlantic salmon, otters, and dragonflies, but they’re under pressure. Pollution, climate change, invasive species, and habitat loss are taking a toll on both water quality and wildlife.

The good news? People like you who spend time in and around rivers are also in a great position to help protect them.

Why me?

You’re out there. You see it.

Whether you’re paddling, swimming, fishing or just soaking up the peace, you’re already connected to these places — and that makes you part of the solution.

When you spend time close to a river it becomes impossible not to care. You see the litter. You notice changes in water quality. You want to help protect the wild spaces you love.

Biosecurity is Key:

Stop the spread of invasive species! Clean and dry your equipment before moving between rivers to protect native wildlife and habitats and dry all kit fully in the sun.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Protect Our Fish:

Fish species like Salmon are expected to be extinct in many North Wales rivers by 2030 and they need all the help they can get! Keep off river gravel beds between October and April—these are vital fish spawning grounds

Save Our Riverbanks:

Stick to paths to prevent erosion and loss of precious habitats. By staying on designated routes, you help maintain riverbank stability and protect wildlife homes.

Take Your Litter Home:

Love our rivers? Take litter home! Protect wildlife and keep our waters clean by disposing of rubbish at home!

Watch the reeds!

River banks and reeds are wildlife havens. Avoid trampling reeds especially during bird nesting season (March to August) to safeguard their homes and ensure fledglings flourish.
