Cafe Notos: Leading the Way in Sustainability by becoming Platinum River Champions

The North Wales Rivers Trust is delighted to announce that Notos Café has been awarded the ‘Platinum Award’ for their commitment to sustainability.

Cafe Notos has placed sustainability at the heart of their business operations, setting a remarkable example for other businesses to follow. Their dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in numerous aspects of their daily practices. Here are some of the key initiatives that have earned Notos this well-deserved recognition:

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Practices

Notos has made a significant shift by replacing toxic cleaning products with eco-friendly alternatives sourced from the Welsh business Môr Cleaning. This move ensures a safer environment for both staff and customers while reducing harmful chemical runoff into our waterways.

Water Conservation Efforts

Every day, Notos makes use of grey water by reusing the leftover water in their refillable glass jugs to nourish the plants around the café. This not only conserves water but also supports a greener, more vibrant space for patrons to enjoy.

Waste Reduction and Management

Notos has implemented several measures to reduce waste. They have partnered with Decent Packaging to provide eco-friendly takeaway containers, completely eliminating the use of plastic straws and wet wipes. The café also uses eco-friendly serviettes and encourages customers to bring their own Keep Cups for hot and cold drinks, significantly cutting down on single-use items.

Additionally, Notos ensures that their outside bins have lids to prevent littering and keeps the premises clean and tidy.

Commitment to Local and Organic Produce

By sourcing seasonal, local, and organic food, Notos supports local farmers and reduces their carbon footprint. For example, they use Pentrefelin pasture-raised beef and dairy milk, ensuring that their ingredients are both high-quality and sustainably sourced.

Sanitary and Efficient Facilities

The customer toilets at Notos are well-maintained with ‘Don’t block’ signs prominently displayed to prevent plumbing issues. Sanitary bins are provided for convenience, and all pipes and fittings are maintained to the highest standard, ensuring no water leaks.

Food Waste Minimisation

Food waste is a major consideration for Notos. They carefully manage stock orders to minimise waste and ensure that any leftover milk, pastries, and cakes are enjoyed by family members, rather than being discarded.

These initiatives reflect Notos Café's unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability. Their efforts not only make a positive impact on the planet but also create a welcoming and responsible community space.

The North Wales Rivers Trust is proud to recognise Notos Café with the Platinum Award. Their commitment to sustainable practices sets a benchmark for other businesses, and we look forward to seeing even more innovative and eco-friendly initiatives from them in the future.
