Rhaglen Torgoch Dosbarth

Winter Classroom Torgoch Programme

Conserving & raising awareness of one of Snowdonia’s last ancient fish.

What’s Included

Egg hatchery program.

With the help of the NRW fisheries team and the Seiont, Llyfni & Gwyrfai anglers, we arrange to collect the initial fish eggs and milt. North Wales Rivers Trust education officer will teach your pupils to enjoy learning about the life cycle of native Torgoch by overseeing a hatchery in your classroom.

Lesson plans & resources.

We have designed schemes of work and lesson plans for key stage 1/2&3. We encourage KS4 and KS5 pupils to gain experience by helping us deliver and implement the programme from concept to finish- allowing them to gain invaluable field work.

Field trip.

When the fish eggs have hatched ( approx 3 weeks in the classroom) pupils will head to Llyn Padarn to release the small fry. We hope that the experience will spark a passion for the natural environment and an understanding of the importance of its protection.

For schools not in the vicinity of Llanberis, we can organise a ‘brown trout’ hatchery, with a release in your local river where possible. Brown trout are from the same family as the Torgoch and pupils can see the same development skills in the fish. Dwr Cymru have a biodiversity community programme where you can access up to £250 for resources/ materials/ transport for this programme.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Engage students in a large-scale, historic restoration effort

  • Deliver messages on habitat, stewardship, and biodiversity using Torgogh as a tangible example of those concepts

  • Link to the heritage of the area and the ice age, geography of the landscape and how people over time (miners) have relied on Torgogh for food.

  • Foster a sense of ownership and stewardship towards an environment that now has “their” fish

  • Achieve a broader public awareness for the Torgogh conservation and restoration program, as the students take their experiences with the classroom hatcheries back to their families and communities

‘Hands on experience at the riverbank can leave a lasting legacy, Igniting a passion for life long learning and the protection and restoration of wild rivers.’
