Projects
Take a look through some of our projects using the interactive map below.
-
Pearl Mussel Project
Gwynedd
Our latest project aims to preserve the rare populations of freshwater pearl mussels.
-
Road Run Off Campaign
Afon Bach- Clwyd
The campaign focuses on tackling the issues of road run off from the A55. This includes road salt, tyres, microplastics and heavy metals and the impact on our rivers. Using green infrastructure to improve the water quality in our rivers.
-
Floating Wetlands
Ynys Mon
Tackling the issue of blue green algae. We are currently working on a pilot project to monitor the effect of bacteria and plankton using floating wetlands. This project includes a full education program where pupils build their own floating wetland.
-
Restoring Fish Spawning Tributaries
Ynys Mon, Gwyrfai, Seiont, Mawddach, Conwy
Due to human impact and more extreme weather patterns we have lost many viable spawning habitats for fish. We aim to increase viable fish habit through woody debris, restoring gravels and boulders to create cover from predation.
-
Connecting Riparian Habitat
North Wales Rivers Catchment
By creating a connected habitat corridor, we can promote the movement and migration of wildlife, allowing species to disperse and colonise new areas, contributing to overall biodiversity conservation.
-
Menai Strait Partnership Forum
Join our community Menai Strait Partnership Forum. We formed this group with MSFOMA to tackle the pollution entering the Menai from the 13 rivers.
-
Natural Flood Management
Afon Leri- Dyfi Catchment
Working with affected communities and the Tal-Y-Bont flood group we will be installing a series of Natural Flood Management techniques across the upper catchment.
-
Prosiect Torgoch
Seiont and Gwyrfai catchment
There are just three native populations of the Torgoch left in Wales and they all reside in Snowdonia lakes. These ancient glacial fish are at risk from warming waters and climate change. Our aim is to protect these iconic species through education, awareness and green infrastruture.
-
Cool Rivers
North Wales Rivers
Our citizen science campaign monitors temperatures across North Wales Rivers. Our tree planting campaign provides shade to exposed sections of rivers and spawning grounds.
-
Rainscapes
Afon Cegin- Seiont catchment and a wider North Wales education programme.
With more extreme weather and drought we are seeing higher more extreme bursts of rainfall. These are exacerbating surface run off of pollutants and running straight into rivers. Our Rainscapes programme is developing Rain gardens for communities, education porgrammes and training and working with farmers to increase free draining soils.
-
EELSments
North Wales Rivers
The once abundant Eels are now endangered. Our Eelsment project allows you to get involved in helping us map barriers to migration and has allowed us to instal cost effective mussel rope Eel fish passage solutions across teh North Wales catchment.
-
Yellow Box Campaign
Water Quality Testing
Thanks to the National Lottery campaign we have been able to involve over 140 Anglers to take part in a National Citizen Science campaign through the Angling Trust. The data collected will allow us to target projects and campaigns in the future.
-
Monitoring flow and Ecoli levels
Afon Ogwen & Menai Strait
We have taken over the flow meter on the bridge at Afon Ogwen to monitor the flow and CSO releases flowing into the Ogwen and out into the Menai Strait. This invaluable data will allow us to target projects and campaigns to ensure that that Ogwen remains a viable river eco system.
-
Connecting Communities- AONB Project
Ynys Mon
We have partnered with Ynys Mon council to work with farmers to protect rivers, restore connected habitat and create a nature trail walk along the river in Ynys Mon to open up the countyside to the wider community.
-
Acidification investigations
Afon Conwy
Restoring Peat bogs in the upper reaches of the Conwy through the Mignient restoration project.
-
Ponds for the Great Crested Newt
Afon Bach- Clwyd
The great crested newt, one of Britain’s flamboyant native amphibians, relies heavily on the health of pond ecosystems for its survival. We are working to create riverside ponds alongside wetland planting to encourage this native creature back to the Clwyd.
-
Monitoring the effects of temperature increase on fish populations.
North Wales & Mid North Wales Rivers
Underwater cameras will be used to live stream videos of these rivers so that the condition of migrating fish can be assessed by anyone online. The Camera system utilises Go Pro Hero 9 technology with underwater WiFi extension cabling allowing the footage to be viewed remotely on an overwater monitor.
-
Measuring Water Quality differences in North Wales lakes & rivers
North Wales Rivers
Community training on water quality monitoring across the North Wales Rivers Trust catchment. Training and monitoring allowing us to map hot spots and changes in water quality using GIS mapping.
-
Camera Trap Monitoring Pine Martens, Otter & Mink
Afon Dyfi
We are working on two separate camera trap projects to survey species to get a better understanding of the number and status of these species in the area, to inform conservation management and predation levels.
-
Habitat Surveys
North Wales Rivers
We are currently carrying out full river habitat surveys. These include snorkel surveys, drone surveys, riparian walk overs and invertebrate monitoring. Using GIS mapping we will be able to collate a full database of up to date data that we can utilise to inform river restoration projects.
-
Unlocking migratory pathways for fish
Afon Llyfni
Our project dismantles weirs, builds fish easements. Restoring nature's harmony: We're dedicated to removing weirs and implementing fish easements for the benefit of migratory fish populations.
-
Outfall Safari
North Wales Rivers
Our citizen science campaign monitors outfalls through survey123 to get a precise geolocation of the conditions.
-
Previous Restoration Projects
Take a look through a small sample of our projects that have a huge impact on our rivers. From habitat restoration, water quality improvements, installing easements to aid river flow and removing obstructions such as wiers and dams, to increase fish passage.
-
Living Seawalls
Ynyn Mon
Our living sea walls is an exciting pilot study to provide habitat using artificial reefs.
