Second floating wetland Launched
This week, we've installed a second floating wetland on Llyn Penrhyn near Holyhead. This is a great step forward in our mission to understand more about using natural solutions to improve water quality and biodiversity in North Wales.
With two floating wetlands now active; one at Llyn Maelog and now one at Llyn Penrhyn, we're also closely monitoring a third lake, Llyn Coron, which serves as a control in the study. This setup allows us to gather data on the unique benefits of floating wetlands compared to a lake without intervention. The project aims to evaluate how these wetlands can naturally help combat eutrophication, a common issue due to excess nutrients in waterways.
These floating islands mimic natural habitats, creating an ideal environment for biofilm growth, which helps to break down nutrients. Additionally, they encourage zooplankton populations and absorb phosphorus, both of which are vital in improving water clarity and supporting a balanced ecosystem.
This project is funded by Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature Challenge Fund, administered by WCVA.
