Community Tree Planting with the Conwy Dragons

A Weekend of Environmental Action

This past weekend, the Conwy Dragons traded their rugby balls for shovels as they took part in our community planting session. The day started with a training session with lead river restoration officer Liam Whitmore on the best methods used to plant trees in a riparian buffer zone, including angling the trees to promote bank stability. The training session also involved a talk describing the benefits of the different species of trees being planted.

The community day planted native trees including Willow, Oak and Elder. The tree species were carefully chosen to ensure they would thrive in the local climate and contribute to biodiversity in addition to matching the surrounding native species. A mosaic pattern was utilised to promote wildlife and create a natural riparian woodland.

Looking to the Future

The community tree-planting event was a resounding success. As the trees planted on Saturday take root and grow, the Afon Conwy will benefit from the shading they provide as well as provide shelter for a number of species.
