Enhancing Afon Bach's Ecological Resilience
This week we have been carrying our restoration works on the Afon Bach in Clwyd. The primary objective of this project is the restoration of the riverbanks to ensure environmental sustainability and the creation of a robust aquatic habitat.
This is essential for fortifying the river's ability to withstand high-flow events, mitigating the risk of erosion, and ensuring the long-term stability of the ecosystem.
Above you can see the bank has been reprofiled to dissipate high flows. Reducing sediment loss and the loss of viable spawning grounds. This bank and others on the Bach, will be planted in the next few weeks with Alder and other trees with strong roots to strengthen the banks over time.
A noteworthy feature of this restoration effort is the introduction of a live willow brash revetment. This natural mechanism serves a dual purpose by preventing erosion and enhancing the stability of the riverbanks. Moreover, it provides an ideal environment for fish and invertebrates, thereby promoting biodiversity in the river.
The long-term impact of these efforts will contribute to a healthier and more resilient Afon Bach ecosystem, benefitting both the local environment and the diverse aquatic species that call it home.
Stay updated as we continue to monitor and report on the progress of the Afon Bach riverbank restoration project in Clwyd, marking a significant step towards a sustainable future for this vital waterway.
