Out on the Afon Leri planning natural flood management plans

In a collaborative effort to address the issues plaguing the Afon Leri, the North Wales Rivers Trust and NRW Oly Lowe recently came together for an on-site meeting with Tal Y Bont Flood Community Group lead Linda Denton. The focus was on understanding the challenges faced by the river, particularly in light of the devastating flood event that occurred in Tal y Bont, Ceredigion in 2012.

The meeting provided an opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of the flood event and engage with the local community group, which has been working tirelessly to tackle the aftermath of the disaster.

Recognising the importance of collaboration, the North Wales Rivers Trust are working closely with the Flood Community Group and other stakeholders to develop a natural flood management plan. This approach focuses on using nature-based solutions to manage and mitigate flood risks, ensuring the long-term resilience of the area.

One key aspect of this collaborative effort is engaging with farmers in the upper reaches of the river. These farmers have expressed a keen interest in participating in trials of natural flood management techniques. By working together, the North Wales Rivers Trust and the farming community aim to implement innovative strategies that harness the power of nature to reduce the impact of future flooding events.

The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of all stakeholders involved to protect the Afon Leri and its surrounding communities. By combining expertise, local knowledge, and community engagement, the North Wales Rivers Trust are fostering a holistic approach to flood management.

The challenges faced by the Afon Leri require collaborative solutions that prioritise the well-being of both the river and the communities it flows through. The dedication shown by the Talybont Flood Community Group and the willingness of farmers to embrace natural flood management techniques are clear indicators of the region's determination to build resilience and ensure a safer future for all.
