Building Otter Holts to Support Dyfi Tributaries

The North Wales Rivers Trust has started a great project to support the tributaries of North Wales Rivers by building otter holts. These otter holts are special houses designed to give otters a safe and comfy place to hang out. Isn't that cool? By doing this, the trust is doing its part to protect and restore the Dyfi catchment area, making it a haven for otters and other wildlife.

Why Otters Are Amazing: Otters are incredible creatures, and they've been through some tough times. They used to have a hard time finding good homes and clean water to swim in. But things are changing for the better, and otters are making a comeback in the UK. Yay! They play a super important role in keeping our rivers healthy. When we see otters happily swimming around, we know the water is clean and the habitat is in good shape. That's why the North Wales Rivers Trust is building these otter holts - to give our otter friends a helping hand!

Creating Otter Paradise: You might be wondering, "What's an otter holt?" Well, it's like a special house just for otters. These holts are built using natural materials like logs, branches, and plants. They're carefully placed along the tributaries of the River, so otters have a safe place to rest, have babies, and raise their little ones. It's like a dream home for otters, where they can enjoy the river and its surroundings.

Bringing Back the Balance: The North Wales Rivers Trust isn't just focused on otters. They know that to make everything right, they need to think about the whole ecosystem. That's why they're working hard to restore and improve the entire catchment area, from the riparian zones to the river bed. By helping otters, they're also helping fish populations and promoting biodiversity. It's like a domino effect - when otters are happy, everything else falls into place.

Joining Forces: The best part is that the North Wales Rivers Trust isn't doing this alone. They're getting the whole community involved! They're calling on local folks, volunteers, and partners to lend a hand in building and keeping an eye on these otter holts. It's a team effort, where everyone can play a role in protecting and restoring the tributaries. How awesome is that?

Checking in on Otter Cribs: To make sure everything is going swimmingly, the trust keeps a close eye on the otter holts. They regularly check if otters are using them and what they're up to. It's like a cool detective mission to see if the otters are enjoying their new homes. This information helps the trust improve their strategies and plan for future projects. Plus, it's just fun to know our otter friends are safe and happy!

Inspiring Everyone: The North Wales Rivers Trust's project to build otter holts shows us that we can all make a difference in protecting our rivers and the wildlife that depends on them.

Keep the Otter cribs coming by attending one of our identiifcation pop up sessions or coming along to one of our build a holt days. Keep an eye on the event page!
