e-DNA Testing for Prosiect Torgoch

The North Wales Rivers Trust's River Restoration Team is carrying out environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling within the Prosiect Torgoch catchment to monitor Arctic charr during their spawning season. This innovative method helps identify rivers used by these endangered fish for spawning, providing crucial data to support their conservation.

e-DNA (environmental DNA) is a technique used to detect traces of DNA left behind by organisms in their environment. By collecting water samples, we can identify which species are present in a river or lake without needing to see or capture them. This method is non-invasive, making it a fantastic tool for monitoring biodiversity and spotting rare or elusive species, such as certain fish, amphibians, or even invasive species.
