New Anchoring System For Floating Wetland
Last month the team were back on site with Biomatrix in Rhosneigr carrying out remedial works to our Llyn Maelog Floating Wetland.
The Floating Wetland project is a pilot study that has been trialing floating wetlands on two lakes, with a third acting as a control, to tackle nutrient pollution and harmful algal blooms. These floating platforms, planted with wetland vegetation, use plant roots and beneficial microbes to absorb excess nitrogen and phosphorus from the water.
This aims to help improve water quality, increase biodiversity, and provide habitat for fish, invertebrates, and birds.
The recent update includes a change to the anchoring system. The new design works like a sailboat anchor, allowing the wetland to move naturally with the wind. We hope this flexibility will help it withstand the weather conditions on Ynys Môn and improve its long-term resilience.
