We’re thrilled to announce the final installation of our Floating Wetland at Llyn Maelog! After lots of hard work from our team, contractors, and community helpers, the floating wetland is in place.

This innovative experiment aims to explore floating wetlands as a solution to the blue-green algae blooms that have been an issue in Llyn Maelog for years. These blooms, caused by high nutrient levels (eutrophication), can be harmful to humans, pets, and wildlife.

This floating wetland once given a chance to grow will become covered in lush vegetation, acting as natural filters. The plants grow above water while their roots dangle below, soaking up nutrients directly from the water and hosting biofilms that further clean the lake.

As our floating wetland flourishes over the next year, it will transform into a vibrant habitat of reeds, flowers, and grasses. Birds will find new nesting spots, juvenile fish will discover safe havens, and small aquatic critters will feast on the algae.

We’ll keep an eye on the water quality and measure the nutrient-packed plants we harvest annually to see just how effective this green solution is. Stay tuned for updates on how the project progresses.
