Afon Cefni Scheme Complete

We recently wrapped up a project on the Afon Cefni on Ynys Mon as part of our Sustainable Fisheries work funded by Natural Resources Wales. Working with the landowner we were able to install just over 200 metres of fencing, plant over 150 native trees and install pasture pumps as an alternative drinking source.

Reducing agricultural impact

Working with farmers to reduce the impact of agriculture on rivers is a vital part of our work. By excluding cattle from the watercourse we can reduce the impacts of poaching on the riverbank and as a result reducing sediment in the river.

Excessive sediment can be detrimental to rivers because it degrades aquatic habitats, effecting fish and invertebrates, and impairing water quality by transporting pollutants. In severe cases it can smother fish spawning gravels, reduce water clarity, decrease oxygen levels, and fill in channels, leading to increased flooding risks and a reduction in biodiversity.

On this site we also planted native trees like; willow, sessile oak and alder in the new riparian corridor. These trees will help to filter excess nutrients and their roots will help stabilise the bank, as well as create new habitat for wildlife.
