JOIN OUR CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT

In Autumn 2024, we launched four River Hubs across North Wales with support from the Smart Rivers project. These hubs are dedicated to collecting and identifying aquatic invertebrates in the Ogwen, Braint, Padarn (Llanberis), and Maelog (Rhosneigr) catchments. We invite volunteers to join us in this vital work to monitor and improve the health of our freshwater ecosystems.

Why Focus on Aquatic Invertebrates?

Aquatic invertebrates, such as insects, mollusks, and crustaceans, are essential to freshwater ecosystems. They play a crucial role in nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter, facilitating nutrient availability for primary producers, and promoting sediment stabilization. Additionally, they serve as a key food source for various species, including fish, amphibians, and birds. Their presence and diversity are strong indicators of water quality, as different species have varying tolerances to environmental pressures.

The Importance of Volunteer Participation

Monitoring aquatic invertebrates provides valuable insights into the health of our rivers. By participating in the Smart Rivers citizen science program, volunteers contribute to a nationwide effort to fill monitoring gaps and assess the impacts of pollution, nutrient enrichment, and other stressors on river ecosystems. This data is crucial for informing conservation strategies and ensuring the sustainability of our freshwater resources.

Get Involved

We welcome individuals of all backgrounds to join our River Hubs. Volunteers will receive training in collecting and identifying aquatic invertebrates, following standardized methods to ensure data reliability. No prior experience is necessary.

Benefits of Volunteering

  • Hands-on Experience: Engage directly with river ecosystems and contribute to meaningful environmental monitoring.

  • Skill Development: Gain expertise in aquatic invertebrate identification and data collection techniques.

  • Community Connection: Join a network of like-minded individuals dedicated to preserving North Wales' natural heritage.
