How Trees And Rivers Work Together

National Tree Week is a chance to celebrate the many ways trees support healthy landscapes. One of the most important relationships is the one between trees and rivers. Along every watercourse, from small headwater streams to larger rivers, trees help shape the physical environment, improve water quality, and support the wildlife that depends on freshwater systems.

The Woodland Trust has produced two videos based on research carried out on the link between riparian woodland, water & water quality (below).

As we mark National Tree Week, restoring and expanding riparian woodland is one of the most powerful actions we can take for nature recovery and climate resilience. Whether through planting native species, managing existing woods, or supporting natural regeneration, strengthening the bond between trees and rivers has benefits that stretch far beyond their banks.
