Do you have a story about Eels In Eryri? We want to hear it!
The North Wales Rivers Trust are launching a community project this year to shine a light on one of our most mysterious and overlooked species, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).
These incredible creatures travel thousands of miles across the ocean before finding their way into our rivers, lakes, and streams here in Eryri. Yet despite their remarkable journey, their story is rarely told.
As part of this project, we’re creating a digital Eel audio trail. A walk through the landscape where people can listen, learn, and connect with the hidden life of eels and their ties to our local rivers.
But we don’t want to tell this story alone.
We’re looking for memories, stories, folklore, and local knowledge about eels in Snowdonia/Eryri.
Did you see eels in the river as a child?
Have you heard old stories or traditions about them?
Do you have a connection to these places and their wildlife?
Whether it’s a vivid memory, a small moment, or something passed down through generations, we would love to include your voice.
By sharing your story, you’ll help bring this hidden species to life and connect people more deeply to the rivers and landscapes around them.
