Careers Festival at Bangor University

The North Wales Rivers Trust took part in Bangor University’s careers Fest. We were asked to discuss ‘Careers in the Charity Sector’ along with St David’s Hospice and Endeavours Adventures.

Our community engagement officer Oisin Lowe-Sellers gave a presentation about the work and mission of the North Wales Rivers Trust. Unfortunately, due to the heavy snowfall the previous evening and morning of the presentation, a last minute change was made in order for him to attend the conference virtually.

The purpose of the presentation was to highlight the different types of roles available in the NGO sector and how previous experience can be applied to them.

The North Wales Rivers Trust has a diverse range of jobs from river restoration, communications and funding. Although not all positions involve going into the field to improve water quality, the behind the scenes roles are equally important.

Oisin said “It was a great opportunity to highlight how to get into the industry and why working in the NGO sector is like no other. There are lots of opportunities to make a difference in this sector that are overlooked. When people think about river restoration they often think about someone in the field testing water quality. In reality there is an entire team that has an equally important role in improving the waterways’’.

At the end of the session, there was an opportunity to ask questions to the panel. These included: ‘What is the most rewarding part of your job?’’ and “Would you ever work in the non NGO sector again?”.

Unsurprisingly, the panel could not see themselves working in another industry.
