State of the Strait
Understanding the health of our bioregion
The State of the Strait Report brings together the latest evidence on the health of the Menai Strait and its connected river catchments. It provides a shared baseline for understanding the challenges we face and the opportunities for restoring nature, supporting communities and guiding future investment.

one shared future

Roots Project - Afon Cegin
The ROOTS Project is a community-led initiative working across the Afon Cegin catchment to reconnect people with their river and shape a healthier future for nature and local communities.
Natural Flood Management- Afon Gwyrfai
Through Prosiect Torgoch, we restored peatlands and wetlands, planting native woodland and improving soil health to slow the flow of water naturally. By holding water higher in the landscape, we can reduce flood risk, improve river health and strengthen resilience from the uplands to the Menai Strait.
Circular Economy:Sustainable Farming
Working with communities from the Menai Strait to the uplands, we're exploring natural alternatives to chemical fertilisers. Through seaweed fertiliser and biochar trials, we're improving soil health, reducing nutrient loss and helping farmers build more resilient, sustainable landscapes.
Afon Braint- working with farmers
Working with local farmers, we're restoring the Afon Braint through riverbank fencing, buffer strips, native tree planting and reconnecting the river with its natural meanders. These nature-based measures slow the flow, reduce erosion, improve water quality and create healthier habitats for wildlife while supporting more resilient farmland.
supporting migratory fish
Across the catchment, we're restoring rivers to help migratory fish reach their spawning grounds. By removing barriers, improving fish passage, restoring in-river habitats and enhancing riparian corridors, we're creating healthier, more connected rivers that support species such as salmon, sea trout and eel while improving the resilience of the whole river ecosystem.
Swimways Project
Through the Swimways project, we're empowering communities to care for their rivers. Volunteers are gaining new skills through snorkel surveys and invasive species identification, while working together to plant native trees that cool rivers, improve water quality and create vital wildlife corridors along our catchments.
