South Africa x Wales: Living Labs

South Africa’s Jeremy Shelton and Jordan-Laine Calder meet with NWRT manager Laura to discuss future plans to raise the profile of each of our endangered fish globally.

North Wales Rivers Trust have been working towards a potential collaboration with our Saving Arctic Char project and South Africas Saving Sandfish project. Fostering a sharing of invaluable knowledge across the equator with scientists, conservationists and educators in each countries quest to protect vulnerable native freshwater species.

Living labs was set up by educator Jordaine and Freshwater research centre scientist Jeremy Shelton to foster meaningful relationships between young people and the environment, believing this is the strongest foundation for conserving freshwater heritage.

North Wales Rivers Trust have previously raised the profile of our own native Arctic Char through our own ‘Living Labs’, Arctic Char project. Working with pupils in Llanberis, students learnt about this ancient fish, hatching eggs and then releasing juvenile fish back in to the natural environment.

We would like to build on this pilot scheme by engaging more young people with our rivers to be the next wave of conservationists and scientists.

Keep an eye out for project updates later in the year!
