Top Tips For Supporting RIvers in 2025

At the North Wales Rivers Trust, our mission is to protect and enhance the conditions for all life that depends on rivers—because, in truth, all life depends on rivers.

Rivers are vital to life, yet they face increasing pressures from pollution and climate change. We are facing a climate emergency, and the challenges before us are significant. Everyone has a role to play—whether it’s addressing pollution from sewage and agriculture or simply being mindful of what you pour down the drain. The health of our rivers is increasingly under threat, but we are not powerless.

It can be disheartening to witness large-scale pollution events, where the power of the individual feels minimal. However, it is reassuring that there are some concrete actions we can all take to make a difference. These actions, when multiplied, can build momentum towards meaningful change. Not only can we take action at the individual level, but we can also push for stronger governance and policies that regulate the changes our rivers desperately need.

]1. Ditch Toxic Chemicals

Ditching toxic chemicals is not only better for your health, but it protects rivers too. Remember harmful substances like pesticides, detergents, and oils can end up contaminating our waterways. Making eco-friendly swaps to more natural alternatives is a big win and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

2. Get Involved in River Restoration Projects

In North Wales there are lots of ways to get involved in river restoration. Look for volunteer events like riparian tree planting days, river litter clean ups and invasive species removal to have a hands on impact.

3. Promote Sustainable Farming Practices

Agriculture is one of the biggest causes of pollution to our waterways. Choosing to buy food from local or organic farmers and providers helps reduce the number of pesticides and fertilizers ending up in our rivers.

4. Support River-Friendly Policies

Stay informed about local and national policies affecting rivers. Advocate for stronger environmental protections and support campaigns aimed at reducing pollution and improving water management. Subscribe to environmental charity and campaigner newsletters. Use reputable resources like The Rivers Trust, Afonydd Cymru and Surfers Against Sewage easy actions.

5. Report Pollution Incidents

While you’re out, if you spot a pollution incident, any illegal activity or anything else, please report it immediately to the authorities.
