River Ambassador Training Day at Plas y Brenin

Our rivers are under threat, the effects of climate change and pollution are putting an immense strain on our water systems. At NWRT we recognise that to influence real change, there is strength in numbers.

So, it was no surprise over the weekend that by bringing together twenty new passionate ambassadors in the name of collective action a fire was lit.

The team of twenty ambassadors were trained on how to protect their local rivers and tributaries. We covered chemical testing, campaigning, and invertebrate testing for water quality. Here’s a rundown of our day on the front line of environmental action!

Early Morning

We kicked off the day full of inspiration from the beautiful Snowdonia landscape and our new acquaintances.

We presented the importance of our mission and the river ambassadors role in helping us work together to protect vital habitat, water quality and wildlife. We shared the methodology behind the programme and began developing skills in chemical testing, campaigning, and invertebrate testing.

Chemical Testing: Scouting the Waters

First up, chemical testing. Armed with testing kits, we headed outside to learn more about water quality. Our ambassadors learned how to measure pH levels, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, phosphates, and other key indicators that signal the health of our waters.

Getting hands-on with the testing equipment was great. By the end of the session, we could see how our testing helps pinpoint pollution sources, ensuring that we can keep our rivers and lakes clean and safe for everyone.

Invertebrate Testing: Exploring the Micro World

The afternoon saw us wading into the world of invertebrates. With nets and ID guides in hand, we ventured down to the lake and river to collect and study these vital indicators of environmental health.

We learned about the crucial roles these invertebrates play in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. This hands-on fieldwork drove home the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect every link in the chain of life.

Campaigning: Amplifying Our Voice

Next, we shifted gears to campaigning. It’s one thing to care about the environment, but making change requires strategy. This session was all about crafting messages that resonate and mobilising our communities for action.

We explored campaign planning, message crafting, and harnessing the power of social media. Ambassadors left this session fired up, ready to launch campaigns that turn the tide.

This training was funded by LNP Cymru funding.
