Exciting New Project to Combat Blue-Green algae on Ynys Mon

North Wales Rivers Trust's Exciting New Project to Combat Cyanobacteria

At the North Wales Rivers Trust, we are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking venture that promises to make a significant impact on the environmental health of our region. Thanks to the generous support of the Local Nature Partnership and Anglesey, we have received £130,000 for an ambitious 18-month-long project centered around the concept of floating wetlands. This innovative endeavor aims to combat cyanobacteria in lakes and explore sustainable ways to mitigate this issue, drawing inspiration from a successful floating project in Boston.

The Floating Wetland Project: A Unique Approach to Environmental Restoration

Cyanobacteria, often referred to as blue-green algae, can pose serious threats to the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. They not only harm aquatic life but can also have adverse effects on human health. Recognising the urgency of addressing this issue, we have teamed up with Bangor University to closely monitor the project's progress over time.

Empowering Future Generations through Education

One of the most exciting aspects of this initiative is our commitment to education and community involvement. We firmly believe that environmental stewardship begins with knowledge and awareness. As part of our project, we are launching an education program targeted at schools across Anglesey. Students will have the unique opportunity to cultivate their own mini floating wetlands in the classroom, featuring diatoms—a vital component of the aquatic ecosystem. This educational initiative aligns with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum, providing students with a hands-on learning experience that fosters a deep appreciation for their environment.

Empowering Communities and Collecting Actionable Data

Our project extends beyond the classroom and into the community. We will collaborate with schools across the catchment area to implement a mini floating wetland program, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among the local population. By the conclusion of this endeavor, we anticipate having quantifiable evidence on the positive impact of floating wetlands as both a refuge for aquatic life and an effective means of reducing cyanobacteria levels.

A Focus on Llyn Maelog in Rhosneigr

Our project's primary focus will be on Llyn Maelog, a lake situated in Rhosneigr. This body of water is not only a cherished local asset but also an ecosystem of great ecological significance. By dedicating our efforts to this specific location, we aim to showcase the potential for positive change and inspire similar initiatives in other areas.
