In May, our Principal Fisheries officer visited the Erch, Soch and Rhyd-Hir catchments on the Llyn Peninsula to assess barriers to fish migration. The focus was on salmonids but impacts on European eel and lamprey were also considered. All potential obstacles recorded in the Rivers Trust Obstacles Database  were assessed, totalling 13 sites.

This assessment is crucial for maintaining and improving fish populations in the region. By identifying and addressing barriers, we help ensure that migratory species can access vital spawning and feeding habitats, which supports their life cycles and contributes to the overall health of the ecosystem.

Generally the picture is good for fish access in these catchments, with only one major concern, this being a gauging weir located in the middle reaches of the Afon Erch. Two smaller weirs were assessed to be partial barriers and NWRT are developing plans to remove or modify these over the summer. 

Ensuring unobstructed fish migration routes is vital for the sustainability of fish populations and the biodiversity of our waterways.
