Afon Wygyr Site Visit
On Thursday the North Wales Rivers Trust embarked on a site visit to the Afon Wygyr along with representatives from Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn. The purpose of the visit was to assess the current health and condition of the river and discuss our multiyear project on the Wygyr.
Phase 1 included fencing to restrict cattle from the river. This helped to reduce the high phosphate levels and reduce sediment loss.
During the visit, we discussed the upcoming phase 2 of the project, tree planting. We walked along the area to be planted as an open woodland that will act as a connecting corridor for wildlife in addition to providing shade to the Wygyr.
During the visit, we had the opportunity to discuss with the representatives from Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn the possibility of future improvements on the Wygyr.
These include:-
Introducing Instream Habitat.
Potential weir removals to restore flow.
Wet meadows to enhance biodiversity and climate-proof the river.
The site visit was a valuable insight to showcase the successful work being done on the Wygyr to improve habitat and water quality that will guide the future conservation efforts of the North Wales Rivers Trust and Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn AONB project.
