Pupils release over one hundred Torgoch into Llyn Padarn
As part of NWRT ‘Prosiect Torgoch’ pupils from Ysgol Waunfawr have released over one hundred Torgoch into Llyn Padarn.
In December, pupils received an exciting delivery of Torgoch eggs. The school children excitedly watched the Torgoch hatch in classroom fish tanks with specially fitted coolers. Over the last few weeks, they grew into Alevins. This was an exciting process as the water temperature had to be checked daily to ensure hatching conditions were met.
On February 9th, along with NWRT mascot ‘Tudur Torgoch’, 45 pupils gathered to release the Torgoch into their new home, Llyn Padarn. NWRT chairman Dr. Robin Parry gave a very insightful talk about the importance of Torgoch in the community and the dangers they face.
'This project is vital to inspire the next wave of ecologists, scientists, and environmentalists who will go on to protect the future rivers, lakes, and Torgoch in Eryri.’
NWRT Laura Owen Sanderson says, 'Prosiect Torgoch is part of a wider movement to raise awareness of the plight of the Eryri Torgoch populations before it's too late. In the Seiont catchment alone, sewage poured into this river system for 7,554 hours (315 days) in 2021, with 1005 individual spills recorded. The Torgoch are facing many modern-day challenges for survival, and we must act now to save endangered populations of Salmon, Sea trout and Torgoch.'
Next week we will be visiting the pupils again for the prize draw on the best Torogoch statue!
